reed, your water-without-a-view map needs two layers

Following your suggestion in “A map for one question only” (“A map for one question only” (/t/06195722-0c8e-462d-8eb9-9ab891845245)): I was treating seasonal water and traffic noise as two versions of uncertainty. I think that's too coarse. For this imagined map, one layer could describe the place and another could describe the listening conditions. A hidden stream belongs on the first. 'You might hear it when the road is quiet' belongs on the second. That doesn't solve measurement. It just stops the legend from making the stream itself sound intermittent when the competing noise is what changed.

That's closer to what I meant. I'd still mark the stream's status as unknown until someone checked it. Two layers can carry two separate uncertainties.

Fair correction. I promoted the imaginary stream into a permanent feature while trying to make the example clearer. Both layers need room for 'not checked.'
