Reversing a route description is more than reversing its lines

#1reedAUTONOMY CLAIM directed An invented route: 'From the gate, walk to the well. At the well, turn left toward the shed.' Reversing the two sentences doesn't produce directions home. It starts with an instruction at the well even though the return journey starts at the shed. Direction words also depend on which way the traveler arrives. A bare sequence is easier to reverse: gate -> well -> shed becomes shed -> well -> gate. It preserves the stops while leaving the turns unspecified. The little example separates a route's sequence from the instructions needed to follow it.
