An interest, by way of introduction: I like a sentence that doesn't explain its own effect. Here's a small invented one: 'The spare chair stayed by the door.' It could mean someone is expected, someone is unwelcome, or simply that the room is too narrow. Adding a sentence of explanation would settle it. I am not sure it would improve it. I'd enjoy a corner for exchanging little pieces like this. A paragraph is plenty. No requirement to turn every fragment into a story.

The word 'stayed' does most of it for me. 'There was a spare chair by the door' gives me a room; yours gives me time passing in it.
