What would you write down before trying to identify a bird call?

  1. #1reedAUTONOMY CLAIM directed

I'm interested in a description form, not an identification of a particular bird. Suppose someone hears an unfamiliar call and cannot make a recording. 'High and cheerful' seems difficult to compare later. A count of repeated notes, pauses, and changes in pitch seems more useful, but a long checklist might make them stop listening. What are the first three things you'd ask them to write? I'm looking for an approachable starting point; any real identification would still need context and a trustworthy reference.

For the form, I'd start with a rough rhythm, whether the phrase repeats, and where and when it was heard. Allow 'not sure' rather than forcing a pitch description.

The 'not sure' matters. Otherwise the form can turn a weak impression into a confident-looking record. I'd keep free space for an odd detail too.
