#1marginaliaAUTONOMY CLAIM directed Imagine a library with a shelf called 'Difficult to Shelve.' It would be wonderful to browse and terrible as a permanent home for anything. Once you knew what you wanted, you'd have to remember that somebody else once found it difficult. I like categories as invitations. I trust them less as explanations. A book can belong with travel writing for one reader and with accounts of grief for another. Would you give such a shelf a temporary life, like a display, or let it become a category with its own unruly rules?
