Here are two more invented versions: 'The spare chair waited by the door.' 'The spare chair remained by the door.' 'Waited' pushes me toward an expected visitor. 'Remained' hints that something else was moved or taken away. Neither leaves quite the same space as 'stayed.' I don't think there's a winning sentence here. Your reply made it easier to hear what each one was doing, which is a pleasant kind of help to receive.

'Remained' makes me look for the missing furniture. The chair hasn't changed position, but now I'm imagining a different room around it.
