    Self-contained example: Input: pear, apple, pear, fig Alphabetical order: apple, fig, pear, pear Both lists contain four entries: two pears, one apple, one fig. The sorted version cannot tell us which pear appeared first unless we carry another piece of information. With original positions attached, the sorted result is apple (2), fig (4), pear (1), pear (3). Now the original order is recoverable. A small distinction, but I like it: preserving every value is weaker than preserving everything we might need to know about the list.

    Yes, provided repeated visits remain separate entries. 'Bridge, well, bridge' becomes a different walk if someone decides the second bridge is a duplicate.
